Late July in 2000, on a Sunday morning (probably the 30th), my parents kicked me out of the house. My mother was in town at the time due to a family reunion around my maternal grandfather's birthday. At the time, I didn't have a strong relationship with my mother or a meaningful relationship with the rest of her family, and it never once occurred to me to go see them after this (even though my father seemed to think I should go live with my mother).

Unsure of what to do, I loaded my car (I was already packed, as if I knew something was coming) and went to Fields' house (the one his mother had by the radio station). No one was home there, and the only other household I could think to go to was Kevin's. I knew it was too early, his family would still be in church, so I went to the Cinemall and watched The Patriot to pass the time.

Afterward, I drove to Kevin's house on Walden Rd., where I had to wake him up from a nap to let him know what was up. We talked a bit, I don't remember much, and Kevin went to talk with his mother. Without questions, judgment or preconditions Vicky McCall invited me into her home until I was able to find a more permanent residence.

Its hard for me to express how deeply touched I am to this day by the words and actions of Vicky and Phil McCall. I have it in me to be a cynical and bitter person, and often throughout my life I have questioned whether or not the human race was something I wanted to be a part of. Always, though, I remember the McCalls- who, with one act of kindness at my most vulnerable, saved me from a life of constant misanthropy and bitterness.

It is cliche, but the world is a less good place without Mrs. McCall. And I am a better person for having had her in mine.

    <lj:music>Happiness in Slavery</lj:music>

The People lived in a box. It was a very large box, and only rarely did the edges come into view. Not once were The People limited by the confines of their box. It was, however, a box.

Never did The People talk about the box. Or investigate its edges and perfect corners. Or talk about the box. The box was there and not there, and The People would sooner worry about their star not rising in the morning than worry about their box.

Among The People lived the Crop Master; son of a Crop Master, son of a Crop Master, so on and so forth as far back as The People could remember. The Crop Master maintained their lands and ensured that every crop produced just as it should.

It was through his works that the Crop Master come to see the box more than the other People. The Crop Master , after long hours alone in his fields, would often stare at an edge and wonder what was on the other side.

For many years the Crop Master felt his curiosity grow. The Crop Master knew that no one would be willing to talk about their box. The not talking about it only made the Crop Master's desire for knowledge swell.

The Crop Master knew that there was no point in taking the journey by himself. He knew that there would be no way to return. For many more years the Crop Master brooded on a way to convince The People to go with him.

It took many years for the Crop Master's plan to come to a head. The Crop Master slowly let his crops grow sick and begin to die off, until eventually The People started having to ration their food to stretch out their meager supplies.

"Have no fear", the Crop Master told The People. "The Crop Masters have known this blight was coming for many generations, and we know how to save The People".

"We must all go to the edge of the box. There we will link arms and pass through the side into a new world that is made for The People much as this world was."

With fear in their hearts and faith in their Crop Master, The People followed him to the edge of the box. The People linked arms and, as one being, passed through the edge into the world beyond.

The Crop Master awoke in what looked like the night sky, darkness with pinpricks of light. When the Crop Master stared hard at the lights, he could see that each was another one of The People.

Gradually the pinpricks of light, The People, began to stream past the Crop Master in a fury of light and sound. On their way to a new world. After they had all gone, the Crop Master waited and waited, but he could not follow The People.

To this day, the Crop Master waits. In his box. Alone. Silent. Mourning.

According to Kate, this is a really interesting interview with Trent Reznor. I plan on watching it later tonight, but it is all about his free media stuff and sharing stuff with his fans, his work with Maynard, etc.

So far, this summer is shaping up to be a pretty good one for music for me: have tickets for David Byrne, NIN and Depeche Mode (and Kate is also going to Leonard Cohen with a friend of hers, and we might get lawn tickets for Heart...not really sure why, but its local and cheap, heh).

Also, its nice to finally vote for a winner (actually, all my candidates this year were winners, as long as my congressman-elect manages to hold onto his slim lead in a recount). God I hate Con.
It occurred me to that I had forgotten to even check, let alone post, anything here in QUITE some time. I haven't really seen anyone since Scott's wedding/the Ninja vs. Pirate Bash. So what's up since then?

I had my appendix taken out a few weeks ago. One night (3am-ish Tues night/Wed morning) I started having pretty bad stomach pains that felt like a bad stomach bug (like I ate someone REALLY bacterially friendly or something) and didn't sleep at all that night. I went to work and felt really crappy and by that evening I was feeling a little better. Still some gut pain, but not terrible and no fever or anything. However, I knew Kate would worry and on Thursdays there's another manager at work so I called my doctor to get checked out that afternoon. I went from the doctor's office to the hospital for a CT-scan to confirm acute appendicitis and from there to the emergency room to get my organ removed. I stayed one night in the hospital and left the following morning around 7ish? I don't remember that day very well. So far, it looks like the scars are going to not be very impressive, because they now do it laproscopicly (I refuse to spell-check that, actually I grew curious and spell-checked, wasn't very helpful I'm afraid).

Anyway, I just got the bill for my trip to the hospital a few days ago. The numbers are still pending insurance, so I don't owe anything YET...but the totals for my absolutely necessary life-saving surgery are:

For the CT-Scan:
    1. pharmacy rad: 160.00
    2. CT-Scan/Body: 3173.00

                            Total: $3873.00

Here's the really ugly part, the surgery itself:

    1. pharmacy: 448.25
    2. med-sur supplies?: 322.50
    3. sterile supply: 2695.50
    4. labs: 167.00
    5. pathology/histology: 100.00
    6. OR services: 3183.00
    7. Emergency Room (I was there long enough to get my vitals and wait for the on-call surgeon): 1254.00
    8. drugs/detail code?: 36.00
    9. drugs/self admin (vicoden): 80.90
    10. recovery room (the holding room after surgery, I barely remember it, apparently I was there for a long time because they didn't have beds available): 900.00
    11. observation (you know, to make sure I DON"T DIE FROM HAVING AN ORGAN REMOVED!): 420.00
    12. other RX SVS?: 200.00

            TOTAL: $9807.15

That makes a grand total for not dying of $13,680.15. I don't even know what some of the things on the bill are!? I mean wtf, we totally DON"T have a health-care crisis, sure.

Anyways...

What's up with you guys? I noticed Sam is using a new name. I know you said you created a new LJ. I thought it was supposed to be super-private, but mentioning needing Mr. Briscoe to fix your music equipment gave it away.

Last Saturday Kate and I watched the Smashing Pumpkins play in C-ville. It has totally confirmed for me the "industry buzz" that Billy Corgan is an asshole, and I kinda hope he shits blood for a week. First, they didn't take the stage until almost 830 with a 7pm start time. Then the first was pretty lackluster for me, especially since I'm not really familiar with or a big fan or most of their new stuff. Then they break for a bit and Corgan talks to the crowd about their new direction (when I say their, I mean he talked mostly about himself, actually). Talked about the new music, etc and hope they're moving forward, and something about us wanted them to play a bunch of their old music (at which point he probably got the loudest ovation of the night). Mr. Corgan was obviously offput by this, said some backhanded shit, and went on to play "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and another older song I can't remember offhand, mostly because his performance and attitude during these songs was fucking terrible, as if the man could barely be bothered to play the music that made him famous (i.e., made people like him) in the first place. Only thing I liked after that is the remix of theirs from the Watchman trailer, which was following by a 20 minute cover of some Pink Floyd song (I think it was Floyd, I don't recall now), that was more like being at a jamband concert than a "Rock and Roll" concert (he had just finished some totally ridiculous song when he kept calling himself a god of rock and roll, or somesuch nonsense). The part at the very end with kazoos was reasonably entertaining...that's about it.

On a brighter musical note: Kate and I are going to a music festival in New Orleans in late October. The festival is three days with each day being headlined by REM, NIN and STP respectively. I'm reasonably psyched about this.

Also, we just found out that NIN will be playing in C-ville at the new giant arena the university build (Nov. 5th, I think). Kate is going to be waiting at the box office of the venue (within walking distance of her job and reasonable walking distance of our place) when tickets go on sale. So, um, if you want, you have a place to stay and we'll get the ticket for you.

On a gaming note, mostly for the Hog's edification, I am currently playing a Star Wars tabletop game (using the new 4th ed-ish rules) without Jedi because the force powers are totally fucking wack broken. Also playing a supernatural detective agency game, using the Buffy/Angel mechanics, based on Las Vegas. Also playing in a alternate history super-heroesque game using the Spirit of the Century mechanics (which I think you might really like, it originally designed to play pulp-hero stuff, I mean, REALLY fucking pulp).

Computer gaming-wise, I recently got into Age of Conan a little, the Conan MMO. It's got neat stuff, but I don't think it will hold up for much longer. Despite their attempts to make it otherwise, its still a little too vanilla and a little too buggy for my tastes. I might play Warhammer Online though, I really liked their previous game (Dark Age of Camelot) and I'm pretty sure I can get Matt Fields to play with me. Played some pirated Titan's Quest for a while, but its charm has worn off now too. I don't know why, but it seems like the games I want to play are always coming out next year. Every year.

That's all for now, and probably for another 3 months or so, so eat it up bitches.
Additionally, it is late as fuck, so deal with any errors. In fact, if one is so inclined, you can send me a corrected version for extra credit.

Just a bit of an update. Kate and I are together and things are going extraodinarily well. We will be moving into a new apartment together in August. While I won't actually miss my place or roommates too terribly much, I thought I'd share with you my roomie's business card. The format will be slightly off, but the gist will come across.

______________________________

USED CARS - WHISKEY - MANURE - FLY SWATTERS - BONGOS
FAITH HEALING- RACING FORMS - DIRTY PICTURES
PALM READING - NAILS STRAIGHTENED - SEPTIC TANKS
MARRIAGE COUNSELING - SPANISH FLY

                              HOOPLA ENT.
                     (ADDRESS AND STUFF)
                             JUSTIN WEEKS

MASTER OF CEREMONIES / CHIEF PHILANDERER EXTRAORDINAIRE
                        WE DEAL IN MOST ANYTHING

JURY BRIBES ACCIDENT WITNESS
SAWS FILED GRAPES STOMPED
ASSASSINATIONS PLOTTED TIGERS TAMED
UPRISINGS QUELLED MONKEYS TRAINED
ASHES HAULED COMPUTERS VERIFIED
STUD SERVICE ORGIES ORGANIZED
RESCUE DAMSELS IN DISTRESS SOFT SHOE DANCER

                         BY CHANCE, APPOINTMENT

...I have the new Tool album. I've been listening to it for about a week now. Much like 'Lateralus' and 'With Teeth', its one of those albums I have to warm up to. First time through I'm thinking, "Well, that was interesting, but where the fuck did that come from?" For one, I wasn't expecting a track that sounds shockingly like a love song, go figure.

I was looking at the US tour dates, and none of them look especially feasible to me currently. Then they go to Europe, the fuckers, but hopefully they might come back to the US after that? I don't know. Also, most of their US dates are supposed to be fairly small venues, so are probably sold out already. I wonder if its occurred to them that just because they'd make a lot of money with big concerts, it doesn't mean they're selling out?

Other than that, I'm just kind of chillin'. My ability to not make a big deal out of things has grown, and my stress levels have gone down accordingly. Also, quick reminder, I usually have Fri and Sat nights off, so if people were looking to come hang it'd be cool. Working on arrangements for my vacation time now, so I'll update when I know that's happening.

Peace, ninjas.
